Papers: guides for Germany
- German visa (Visum) for Iranian applicantsAn Iranian national permanently resident in Iran follows the German Embassy Tehran’s visa route, even during a temporary stay abroad. Select Schengen or the relevant national-visa category and check the current restricted-service instructions before arranging an application.
- Residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel)An Iranian national needs the residence procedure matching their purpose of stay. Contact your local immigration office; Berlin offers separate routes for study and work. Iran is not covered by the visa-free privilege in § 41 AufenthV.
- Register your address (Anmeldung)An Iranian national moving into a home in Germany normally registers within two weeks. In Berlin, use a Bürgeramt appointment with your identity papers and Wohnungsgeberbestätigung; an Iranian eAT cannot use the city’s online registration route.
- Housing confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung)An Iranian tenant needs a Wohnungsgeberbestätigung for address registration just like other residents. Ask the housing provider for it; if it is refused or late, tell the registration office promptly. A rental contract does not replace it.
- Changing address (Ummeldung)An Iranian national moving to a new main home must register the new address, normally within two weeks. In Berlin, arrange a Bürgeramt appointment and obtain a new Wohnungsgeberbestätigung; an eAT does not enable online registration.
- Leaving Germany: AbmeldungAn Iranian national giving up their German home without taking another home in Germany must deregister. Do this from one week before to two weeks after moving out. Separately check with the immigration office how leaving affects your residence permit.
- Using the Bürgeramt in BerlinAn Iranian resident can use the Bürgeramt for address registration in Berlin. Choose the service first and follow its document and appointment rules; the German passport services listed there do not apply simply because you live in Germany.
- Contacting the Ausländerbehörde in BerlinFor an Iranian resident of Berlin, the immigration office is the Landesamt für Einwanderung (LEA). Use the online application for your service, or the responsible unit’s contact form if no online application exists. The former appointment portal is closed.
- Access to an IntegrationskursFor an Iranian national, access to an Integrationskurs depends on the residence title and personal circumstances, not the passport alone. Check your entitlement with the immigration office or BAMF and obtain the participation authorisation before enrolling.
- German citizenship through EinbürgerungAn Iranian national can apply for German Einbürgerung if the legal requirements are met; residence alone is insufficient. The standard entitlement requires five years of lawful habitual residence plus further conditions. In Berlin, start with the LEA Quick-Check.
- Permanent residence: NiederlassungserlaubnisAn Iranian resident can apply for a Niederlassungserlaubnis when the requirements for their residence category are met. In Berlin, start with the LEA eligibility check; skilled workers, recognised refugees and other groups have separate routes, so the general route is not universal.
- Requesting a MeldebescheinigungAn Iranian resident registered in Berlin can obtain a Meldebescheinigung to prove their registered address. The online service accepts an eAT with active eID and PIN; a certificate request does not register a new address or replace an Anmeldung.
- Taking the EinbürgerungstestAn Iranian naturalisation applicant may need the Einbürgerungstest to prove civic knowledge; check whether your existing evidence is accepted first. In Berlin, book registration through a VHS and distinguish the registration appointment from the actual test date.
- German Reisepass after naturalisationAn Iranian passport holder needs German citizenship before applying for an ordinary German Reisepass; permanent residence alone is insufficient. If you have become German, Berlin requires a personal Bürgeramt application and evidence for the first German document.
- Personalausweis after German citizenshipAn Iranian national without German citizenship cannot obtain a German Personalausweis merely by living in Germany. After naturalisation, apply personally at the Bürgeramt; the German ID card and an electronic residence permit are different documents.
