Leaving Germany: Abmeldung
An Iranian national giving up their German home without taking another home in Germany must deregister. Do this from one week before to two weeks after moving out. Separately check with the immigration office how leaving affects your residence permit.
Step by step
- Check departure and residenceDecide whether you are giving up the home; clarify your residence title’s absence rules before departure.
- DeregisterSend the Berlin form and identity copy to a Bürgeramt within the allowed period, or use an appointment; keep confirmation.
For an ordinary move within Germany, register at the new address instead. Berlin distinguishes giving up a home permanently from a temporary stay abroad where you intend to return to that home.
Berlin accepts the completed deregistration form by post with a copy of your passport or identity card. Keep the Abmeldebestätigung. Deregistration and the continued validity of a residence title are separate matters: the LEA describes different expiry rules by title and says to apply beforehand if you need a longer permitted absence.
