Führerschein: converting an Iranian licence
An Iranian driving licence is not an EU licence and Iran is not listed for simplified conversion in Anlage 11. After ordinary residence begins in Germany, driving entitlement generally lasts six months; arrange conversion and the required tests early.
Step by step
- Arrange conversion before recognition expiresAsk the licence authority to assess your Iranian licence and residence date, prepare its class-specific evidence and organise the required tests through a driving school.
The six-month rule concerns entitlement to drive, not an automatic extension while a conversion application is pending. Limited extensions are possible for a demonstrably short stay under §29. A national licence must be valid and the applicable translation or international-permit evidence requirements must be met; an international permit does not replace the national licence or become a German licence.
Because Iran is outside Anlage 11, conversion normally requires theory and practical tests, although the statutory training rules are waived for qualifying conversion. Berlin requires the valid original national licence, identity and residence evidence and the relevant photo, first-aid, eyesight and driving-school/test-centre details for the class concerned. Read the complete class-specific list and have the authority assess your licence before driving beyond the recognition period.
