Elterngeld: apply after birth
Iranian parents in Germany need a qualifying residence status as well as the family and work conditions for Elterngeld. Have the Elterngeldstelle assess your title and plan the child's benefit months; apply after birth without delaying the limited back payment.
Step by step
- Plan and submit the claimCheck residence eligibility and the birth-date-specific form with the office, agree benefit months and submit the signed application with its requested evidence.
You generally need to live in Germany with the child, care for the child yourself and work no more than 32 hours weekly averaged over the child's life month. Income limits also apply. For Iranian nationals without EU free-movement rights, the exact residence title matters: student titles can qualify only with additional conditions, while not every search title qualifies.
The application identifies the child's life months for Basiselterngeld, ElterngeldPlus or partnership bonus. Back payment is limited to the three life months before the life month in which the application arrives. Berlin's current service notice directs new applications by signed postal submission while its digital portal is being rebuilt; the assistant alone does not submit the application. Check the notice before sending.
