Schulsystem: choosing a school after moving
Iranian families in Germany should use their federal state's school rules; this guide describes Berlin. Contact the district Schulamt about placement, explain schooling in Iran and German-language needs, and check the route to the appropriate school and qualification.
Step by step
- Arrange placement adviceContact the district Schulamt and prospective school, explain the child's history and ask for the required records and placement steps.
Berlin primary school normally lasts six years, with some earlier secondary-school routes. Integrierte Sekundarschule and Gymnasium can both lead to Abitur, and Gemeinschaftsschule offers a further route. A school type's name alone does not determine which placement is suitable after moving from Iran.
The district Schulamt handles school-place allocation; the Schulaufsicht advises on educational questions. Contact the school and office with the child's age, previous schooling, reports and language or support needs, following their current requirements. Ask how Iranian records should be presented and what language support is appropriate; do not infer a German class level only from an Iranian grade number.
