Understanding a Mietvertrag
For an Iranian tenant in Germany, a Mietvertrag sets the agreed rent and use of the home under German tenancy law. Check the rent, operating-cost arrangement and any deposit before agreeing; the same statutory tenant protections apply regardless of Iranian nationality.
Step by step
- Review the agreementCheck the rent, operating costs, start date and deposit clauses before agreeing.
- Clarify and keep recordsAsk about unclear terms and keep your contract and payment records.
The landlord must provide the agreed use and maintain the home in a suitable condition; the tenant owes the agreed rent. Before agreeing, make sure you understand which home is rented, the start date and the payment terms.
Operating costs can be agreed as a flat amount or advance payments; advances require annual accounting. A residential deposit has statutory limits under § 551. Ending a residential tenancy requires written notice under § 568. These are separate questions, so keep the contract and ask about unclear terms before signing.
