How German Steuer works for residents
An Iranian resident’s German income-tax position depends primarily on residence and income, not passport alone. Wage tax is income tax collected through payroll; a deduction from salary does not always remove the duty to file an annual return or address income connected with Iran.
Step by step
- Map your tax situationIdentify your residence and income sources, verify payroll details and ask the tax office or qualified adviser about filing and foreign-income treatment.
A German home or habitual residence generally brings unlimited income-tax liability under § 1 EStG. For qualifying employment the employer withholds wage tax on the employee’s behalf. Keep the tax ID and payroll records correct; a tax class affects withholding rather than granting a nationality-based tax exemption.
Check annual filing duties for your income mix. Berlin’s tax authority explains circumstances requiring employee returns, while other income can create further duties. Clarify foreign-income treatment for your own situation instead of assuming that Iranian income or a transfer from Iran is either automatically taxable or automatically exempt.
