Eheschließung: the Iranian case in Germany
Iranian nationals planning marriage in Germany should start with the local Standesamt's individual consultation. Clarify Iranian civil-status evidence, translations and the exemption from an Ehefähigkeitszeugnis before arranging the ceremony.
Step by step
- Get the individual document requirementsConsult the residence-area Standesamt, explain both partners' Iranian or other nationality and status, then prepare the specified originals, translations and exemption application.
Berlin's justice administration explains that Iranian nationals use the exemption procedure because Iran does not issue the relevant Ehefähigkeitszeugnis. The application goes through the Standesamt, which assembles and forwards the case to the competent higher court. Ask for requirements specific to both partners, previous marriages and any protected status; do not substitute a generic foreign-national document list.
Berlin requires individual consultation and generally original documents with appropriate German translations. Confirm any authentication requirement for Iranian documents with the office before obtaining papers. Its registration is valid for six months once completed. The Senate also states that paternal consent is not required in the exemption procedure for adults legally able to marry under German law; recognition in Iran is a separate question.
